Bacteria in COPD

Anyone curious as to what I do in school these days?

I have entered the exciting world of bacteria!!!

I am doing a ten week project where I detect, identify and quantify the bacteria that colonize the lungs of patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (that would be people who smoke, therefore destroying their respiratory systems with emphysema and bronchitis).

I am learning some new techniques including culturing, DNA extraction and Real-time Quantitative PCR.

This is me and Mati at our workstation.

not that i totally know what that is...but...isn't PCR "polymerase chain reaction"? I may be way off, but that is what first popped into my head!

I do the real time PCR in my old lab as well. For a basic description, try this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_polymerase_chain_reaction

Also, my horse "Chick" has COPD. But in horses it is also called "Heaves" and its more a mix of asthma and allergies to hay and dust. Similar to the human version though. We used brochodilators to treat horses with it, but Chick's isnt bad enough...praise God!
