There are lots of benefits to belonging to a multicultural family.
One is celebrating holidays in more than one way.
For example, the Swedish tradition on birthdays is to go into the person's room in the morning and give them their birthday presents in bed. So that is what we did with Esther this morning right when she woke up! I sang the American song, Niklas sang the Swedish song, and she opened up her gifts from us and from her Swedish grandparents (a new toy and new books).
She wasn't quite sure what to make of it at first, since we don't usually both bust into her room singing, but she liked ripping the paper and playing with her new toy (which we have on video instead).
Later on tonight we will be celebrating Esther American-style, with a little party where she will receive even more gifts, and eat cake too!
Now, I wonder how the South Africans celebrate birthdays?!?!

Our family has always awakened the birthday person by singing to them and giving them a birthday present in bed. My family came to the US (Minnesota) from Sweden, but I didn't realize that was a Swedish tradition! Cool!
